Here are the most worthwhile groups and such that I have learned about so far. If you want to recommend any others, please let me know!

This list will cover:

  • Metacrisis Initiative
  • Design School for Regenerating Earth
  • Finding an Intentional Community
  • Going into Politics
  • New Monasticism

Metacrisis Initiative

Jem Bendell’s Metacrisis Initiative: Become a member of the site for $8/month or $80/year and you can sign up for monthly “two-hour participatory webinars” with Bendell and a 10-person peer mentoring group (new cohorts beginning every 6 months).

Design School for Regenerating Earth

An online learning community of people working toward regeneration within and between bioregions, based on Joe Brewer’s Design Pathway model. Membership starts at $5/month.

Finding an Intentional Community

Use the Foundation for Intentional Community directory to find an intentional community to visit, join, or support.

Going into Politics

  1. Citizens’ Climate Lobby: an international, nonpartisan organization equipping citizens for political advocacy on climate issues.
  • No Labels: if you agree that increasing political polarization in the U.S. is a bad thing, you might look into joining/supporting/volunteering with the centrist, “commonsense” No Labels movement.
  • Please consider running for local elected office. I presume that if you are reading this, you are a thoughtful, caring individual who wants to act responsibly and do what’s right. We need more people like that involved in politics. And winning a local election is often a more realistic prospect than people realize. Here are some places you might get started.

New Monasticism

  • Center for Spiritual Imagination:
    • Weekly 30-minute meditation and contemplative prayer practice offered online.
    • Two self-guided online courses on contemplative prayer and the monastic life, by donation.
    • Periodic online study and meditative events offered free or by donation.
    • Vowed members follow a Rule of Life that includes praying the daily office, two 30-minute periods of contemplative prayer per day, regular participation in Holy Eucharist, a one-week retreat per year, and more.
    • Based out of the Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, NY.
  • Northumbria Community
    • The community is based in the UK, but folks in the U.S. or elsewhere who want to join an online prayer group can contact the Nether Springs office.
    • The website provides information about the community, such as their Rule of Life and daily prayers, including a set of beautiful Celtic compline prayers.
  • Monasteries of the Heart:
    • A ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie.
    • They send out regular emails and occasionally host online classes and mini-retreats (fees on a sliding scale or by donation).
  • Evolving Church Curriculum: If you are interested in starting a small group with the purpose of exploring new expressions of Christian monasticism and would like to learn about a curriculum I have developed potentially for people such as yourself, feel free to contact me.
